Writing Words - writing it is the only way of getting it written

All Hail 750words.com

June 15th 2011 13:13
I've just finished my 750words.com entry for today. I've written every day in June so far and I'm on an 19-day writing streak. Online morning pages, that's 750words.com in a nutshell.

The term morning pages was coined by Julia Cameron in The Artist's Way. The idea is that you get the clutter out of your head by writing three pages in longhand first thing in the morning, and then you can create the things that matter. 750words.com is for those of us who'd rather type their morning pages.

I agree that there's something about writing by hand that gets ideas flowing, but as far as stream of consciousness writing is concerned, I find that typing works better for me. I'm much faster typing and it's easier to follow my crazy thoughts that way.

I don't always manage to write my 750 words first thing in the morning. But whenever possible, I write them before I sit down to write anything that would benefit from a clean mind, like short stories, screen plays and blog posts. Often I use the site for brainstorming, too, and I allow myself to go off on any tangent that tempts me. I usually end up with a handful of good ideas or a usable paragraph or two, and some more material that I can use with a bit of editing. It does help me get ideas out, I can always develop them, turn my jumbled thoughts into intelligible prose later.

Sometimes, when I don't have time to write anything else, writing my 750 words helps me to keep up the momentum. Yes, sometimes my entries are very random, sometimes they turn into a bit of a moan-fest about why I'm not writing etc., but at least I can look back and say: But I wrote something. I wasn't having the best day, but I did it anyway. It's the best I can do sometimes, and it's good that I did it. On days like this, when time is scarce and I'm tired and I don't feel like writing, writing despite of it all is a victory. Bad writing is still writing, and nobody ever needs to see it. I don't have to re-read my entries. I do, though. I download the zip file of my entries every month and go through it. While I usually use the good bits immediately, I miss stuff sometimes. So it's good to dig it up and make the most of it, be reminded of this weird stuff that my subconscious throws at me when I give it a chance.

Also, 750words.com is great as a personal writing trainer. It gives me an incentive for showing up on the treadmill every day and it rewards me in the form of badges. I look forward to it, especially on days when I don't get a chance to sit down for 20 minutes until late. More often than not, my morning pages are evening pages these days. I don't care, as long as I get the thing written. I'd prefer to write early in the day, but if I can't, I can't (the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, and I cannot change what the baby wants and when she wants it). So I write whenever, and if it turns out it's after 9pm, I have something to look forward to all day. 20 minutes I have to myself, doing something just for me. 750words.com equals precious me time. I don't get much of it at the moment, but that's the trade-off I knew I was letting myself in for when I embarked on this motherhood adventure.

Writing with a baby is challenging, and anything that makes it easier has to be cherished. I know I could just sit down and write three pages in Pages every day, I don't need a website for it. But it's things like seeing that I'm on an 19-day writing streak, getting badges because I've written x many days in a row etc. that make me do it some days.

So, thank you, 750words.com.

In a Word: Where to find inspiration

February 28th 2011 17:47
A Word A Day isn't the only place where you can find a new word every day. Here's a list of others I know of - they may come in useful for the March NaBloPoMo theme or inspiration in general:

Merriam-Webster Word of the Day

Vocab Vitamins: Today's Word

Dictionary.com Word of the Day

EnglishOnline.net Word of the Day

Have I missed any good sites? Let me know in the comments.

Eye-Catching Icons for Your Blog

Writing Words Eye Chart

Want an eye catcher for your blog or website? Try the VSP Eye Chart generator and turn your blog name into a chart. I love this little web app, I'll probably turn all sorts of text into eye charts from now. You can enter up to 61 characters - not a huge amount, but it's long enough for your blog name or a strap line.

Are you going to use the eye chart generator? If you do, share the link to your blog in the comments.

Plinky: Daily Writing Prompts

July 5th 2010 18:17
As far as I'm concerned, it's always a good idea to have a selection of writing prompts at your disposal. I've subscribed to quite a few RSS feeds of writing prompt sites which means I get several new prompts delivered to my RSS reader every day. I don't use all of them, sometimes I go for days and weeks without looking at them because I don't need prompts to keep me writing. Sometimes, however, I need a little nudge - a word, a phrase or a paragraph that isn't my own - to get the creative juices flowing. Then I browse my collection of writing prompts. So far, this has always saved me from staring at the blank screen.

My latest discovery is Plinky. Plinky posts a new question every day and people can answer it directly on the website. You need an account to post your answers (and you can add photos to your answer and share them on Twitter and Facebook if you want), but anyone can see the questions and read other people's answers. The daily prompts are meant for bloggers but that shouldn't deter fiction writers. So if you feel a bit uninspired, check out the question of the day or browse the prompts for a little nudge.

Crash Revisions Mini-Workshop

February 19th 2010 21:05
SavvyAuthors.com are running an interesting mini-workshop: Crash Revision, presented by Holly Lisle. It will run from March 28 - April 1 and is $5 for non-members and free for members. Sounds good, doesn't it?

If you realise half-way through NaNoEdMo that you need help with the revision process, Crash revisions might be just what you're looking for.

Links and Tips for NaNoEdMo

NaNoEdMo is less than three weeks away. That means you'd best brush up on your editing skills now. If you wait until March, you'll lose precious editing time then.

Here are a few tips and links that will make life during EdMo easier

Best Magazines for Writers

January 28th 2010 20:58
There is lots of information on writing available online, but there are times when it's nice to have a magazine you can leaf through. If you can't access a computer during the day (or have to watch which websites you visit), a writing magazine may be the answer. Here are a few good ones to consider:

Writers' Forum - This is my favourite. It's full of advice, they run short story and poetry competitions every month and they list writing courses and writing competitions. Writers' Forum also accepts articles, both from published and unpublished writers. It's published monthly and available at WHSmith (a UK newsagent

More blogs for writers

January 18th 2010 14:54
After writing about the best blogs for writers on Saturday, I felt bad about my other favourite blogs that were culled from the list.

In the end, you choose how many blogs you want to read, and chances are you don't agree with my choices for the best blogs. So here are more blogs I read and recommend

Best Blogs for Writers

This is a difficult one - there are so many good blogs for writers out there and if you follow too many of them, you won't have time to write. I've cut my selection down to five writing blogs I couldn't do without:

Boosting the wordcount

January 9th 2010 22:18
One of the best online tools to help you boost your wordcount is Write or Die. This simple tool will make you write a lot of words unless you don't mind your computer going berserk and screeching at you. You decide how long you want to write and how many words you want to write in that period, and then you start typing. Whenever you stop typing, the punishments begins.

It's an excellent help if you struggle with getting the words out, not just during NaNoWriMo.

How to revise your novel

August 19th 2009 20:42
I'm surprised I seem to have never mentioned Holly Lisle here. Holly is awesome. She's a successful fitcion author, she's published lots of free material for fellow writers to improve their craft, and she's compiled a comprehensive course called How to Think Sideways.

A few days ago, Holly wrote a blog post called Do you need to know more about how to revise your novel?, in which she asked if people were interested in learning how she honed her revision skills. Of course, the response was huge. As a consequence, Holly has put up a preliminary How to revise your novel site where people can indicate what they want to know. You can also sign up there if you want to be kept in the loop about the course
