Up and Down
July 7th 2010 21:15
Writing is like everything else in life: One day it's great and the next it all goes to pieces. What goes up must come down, they say.
So how do you deal with the times when you can't get a sentence right? How do you make it through the writing downturn?
What has saved me countless times is to remember that once you're all the way down, the only way is up. You just have to keep writing, produce one clumsy sentence after the other until you write one that's better than the one before. And then another one that's better than that. Looks like a simple solution, but it takes some determination to do it.
Bad writing spells come and go. That's just the writing life.
