Travel writing workshop

I've sacrificed my Saturday for a travel writing workshop. I was a bit cross with myself yesterday, but today I'm glad I went. It confirmed some things for me and I learnt a lot, too.
Travel writing is still journalism, so you have to stick to the facts. You also need to tell a story, though, albeit a real one. Travel pieces, more than any other features, depend on the writer's ability to show the subject matter rather than just tell people about it. You want to make the country and it's people come alive for the reader.
There are quite a number of novelists who've ventured into travel writing and vice versa. My primary focus has always been fiction and that's not going to change, but I've realised today that writing fiction and travel features is an ideal combination.
