Short Guide to Writing a Novel
October 20th 2007 18:54
I have another BBC link for you, this time on novel writing.
This brief how-to is perfect for NaNoWriMo - especially if you're writing your first novel. All the important bits are in there, you don't need to know more.
In my opinion, too much theory terrifies people with yet little writing experience. Sure, you need to know the basic rules, but gaining some experience is much more important. Write, see what works and what doesn't work - then find out more about the theory.
That is why I think NaNoWriMo is such a great thing. It makes people write and gives them little time to worry about dos and donts. There is only one rule writers need to know: Writers write.

Oh dear...you jogged my haphazard memory...
Many years ago, when I worked in film, I was at the 'industry watering hole', frequented by actors and techies alike, in theatre and film, and as usual I had filled up nearly to the brim on my favourite drink, the dry martini.
Also, per usual, I was pontificating about my plans...I was going to write...I wanted to be a writer...etc!
Then one evening, between slurps from my martini bowl, I always ordered the LARGE martini, I heard those fatal words, "WRITERS WRITE!"
I was immediately silenced, for I knew I had tried, but usually could never read the scrawl the next day, or if it was legible, it was utter tripe and twaddle!
I am sober today...the twaddle continues however, in unmerciful fulsomeness!
cheers

P.S. Thanks for the post Sonya1, I'll check this site out!
