Writing Words - writing it is the only way of getting it written

Quantity over Quality

October 22nd 2007 17:50
Yep, you will hit rough patches in November when the words stop flowing. One moment you think you are on to writing a good story, and the next you have no idea how to go on. Then, more than ever, it is important to keep writing, even if you feel that every word you write equals watering down your masterpiece.

I usually hit the creative badlands right after a writing high. When the magic story-telling power has disappeared again to that mystic place it came from, I realise that I have to continue writing on my own, by which I'll probably destroy all the magic I’ve created, I am prone to thinking then.

That might well be the case, but that is not the point. NaNoWriMo is all about quantity, not quality. As long as we’re adding words to our word count, we’re doing fine. It’s important to remember this when we feel uninspired, or worse, when we think we are the worst writers ever.

For once it is quantity over quality: 1667 words per day. Just keep writing, it will be ok!

When you can’t think of anything to write, start writing anyway.

You know what's annoying? I usually have sparkling new ideas JUST as I am about to fall asleep, when it's too late to get up and write it down, then I wake up and won't remember it

But yes, quantity is important. My writing lecture always says "the only way to improve, is to write everyday"

Amy,

I so know what you mean! That is why I keep a pen and paper at my bedside, and I force myself to turn the light back on and write the ideas down. Well, most of the time - sometimes I think the idea is so good I just have to remember it in the morning. Wishful thinking ...

Here it is, the end of October, and I'm thinking of giving NaNoWriMo a go. I haven't completed a novel yet, in 2 years of trying.

Susan,

you should definitely give it a go! The deadline and the knowledge that you are not alone in your endeavour work like a charm. Even if you don't manage to write 50,000 words, you are bound to get something out of it. But I am sure you can make it!

Thanks for your visit

The same thing happens to me! Always. I never write it down, and I never remember it in the morning, either. I really have to just suck it up and write it down when it comes to me, no matter what I'm doing.

Patricia,

Thanks for popping in!

Yep, I guess there is no way around writing ideas down. That's why I have pens and peices of paper strewn all over the place. I never leave the house without a notebook, as well. People look at you funny when you clear out a little space on a supermarket shelf and start scribbling away - but hey, as a writer you need to be a little eccentric at times .
