NaNoWriMo Training: Writing Weekend
September 5th 2010 20:01
Freewriting several time a week will get you into the habit of writing. If you want to increase your NaNo training, consider a writing weekend. It's exactly what it says on the tin - you spend much of a weekend writing:
Clear your calendar for the weekend and remove as many distractions as you can. Forget you have a DVD player and several box sets of TV shows to be watched, unplug your WiFi modem until you've written at least 2,000 words.
Choose an idea you won't want to use for NaNoWriMo. If you have one, select a short story idea - starting and finishing the first draft of a short story in a weekend is an achievable goal.
If you are sure you won't start writing your November story, you may also want to consider writing some of the backstory of your novel. Backstory is everything that you need to know about your characters, the world they live in and other background info that will influence your story, but should never make it into the novel in big chunks. The advantage of writing backstory: You'll find out more about the world you're going to create in November and the more you know about it, the easier it will be to write it.
