Clustering: Develop Story Ideas
September 4th 2010 20:52
You have an idea for a story but don't know if it's going to develop into a story? Try clustering, a process introduced by Gabriele Rico. It's a technique that many writers use to visualise all aspects of a story, even the hidden ones.
I wrote an introduction to clustering a few months ago called Clustering: Brainstorm and Develop Writing Ideas.
When you cluster an idea, you'll find out fast how much material you're likely to get from it. The more associations you have, the bigger the story will be. Sometimes it helps to take a break and go back to your cluster a few hours or days later. If it's a big idea, your subconscious will keep working on it and you'll be able to add more associations to your cluster.
