Writing Words - writing it is the only way of getting it written

Epistolary Novel

April 1st 2008 18:07
According to Wikipedia, an epistolary novel is a novel told through a series of documents. These documents are usually letters but other documents such as newspaper articles and journal entries, and more recently emails and blog entries are also used.

Whenever I come across this literary term, I immediately think of The Color Purple, Bram Stoker's Dracula and The Boy Next Door. It is a powerful way to tell a story as a writer can give a lot of information that the main character does not necessarily know, but which gives a new dimension to the story.

I have always wanted to try telling a story through letters and/or emails, but until I found out this month's theme for NaBloPoMo, I had no idea that this was the perfect way to tell part three of my novel.

Strictly speaking I won't have written an epistolary novel by the time I've finished part three. It will be an approximately one third epistolary novel .
