NaBloPoMo January Theme: Best

December 31st 2009 23:13
I'm not sure whether I'll be blogging on the January theme - even though "best" should be fairly easy. I will, however, take part in NaBloPoMo and try to write a blog post every day in January and then slow down to three posts a week from February on.

Happy 2010!

Beat Procrastination

December 30th 2009 19:28
Do you find yourself procrastinating instead of writing? I know I do, especially now after the holidays. I've come across an excellent blog post by Alastair Humphreys with tips to help fight procrastination, and I'm sure someone else will find it useful, too.

What do you do to trick yourself into writing?

How To Revise Your Novel opens January 2

December 29th 2009 20:49
How To Revise Your Novel, Holly Lisle's course on, well, novel revision, will open for new students on 2nd of January (12 noon EST). If revising your novel is your New Year's Resolution, this course is going to make sure you fix your novel this time. I'm in the early bird class, and even though I've fallen badly behind over the holidays, I know that I've come much further already than I've ever made it on my own. I wholeheartedly recommend How To Revise Your Novel.

Holly is planning to leave the course open for registration for a week. There might be another course later in 2010, this isn't written in stone yet though. If you're toying with the idea of signing up, do it this time.

And now, if you'll excuse me please, I have a novel to revise.

100 first lines of novels

December 11th 2009 22:26
This list claims to contain the 100 best opening lines of novels (or sentences in some cases), as chosen by the editors of American Book Review.

I don't agree with all of them and think there are some others missing, but that's not the point. The list is a collection of first lines of published novels, and as such it is rather useful to writers who want to see their own opening lines in print.

I have a problem with ???

December 6th 2009 21:39
I could have spelled out the words: question marks. That's not where my problem lies, though. I really seem to have trouble hitting the ?-key when a character asks a question.

I'm on page 33 of my NaNoWriMo 2008 manuscript now, going through the first round of reading and marking up what's wrong in the first draft (and what's worth keeping, and I'm pleased that there are a few good bits already) according to Lesson One of HTRYN. I'm not supposed to edit the typos and spelling mistakes at this stage, and I don't. It's difficult to ignore these mistakes, but I'm doing okay. The missing ?s are driving me mad, though. I haven't counted how many I've missed so far, but my guess is there's one missing per page. What's so hard about hitting the ?-key?

Travel writing workshop

December 5th 2009 19:54
I've sacrificed my Saturday for a travel writing workshop. I was a bit cross with myself yesterday, but today I'm glad I went. It confirmed some things for me and I learnt a lot, too.

Travel writing is still journalism, so you have to stick to the facts. You also need to tell a story, though, albeit a real one. Travel pieces, more than any other features, depend on the writer's ability to show the subject matter rather than just tell people about it. You want to make the country and it's people come alive for the reader

HTRYN: Novel revision help

December 1st 2009 21:32
After a few bumps, I managed to sign up to How To Revise Your Novel, the new course by Holly Lisle. That's good news for me because it will give me some clear instructions and direction for novel revision.

I've mentioned a few times that I don't have trouble writing first drafts, but that I always struggle with the revision process. I have high hopes that HTRYN will make me a skilled editor of my own work.
